Magnetic Field Amplification by a Nonlinear Electron Streaming Instability

Magnetic field amplification by relativistic streaming plasma instabilities is central to a wide variety of high-energy astrophysical environments as well laboratory scenarios associated with intense lasers and electron beams. We report on new secondary nonlinear instability that arises for dilute beams after the saturation linear Weibel instability. This grows due transverse magnetic pressure beam current filaments, which cannot be quickly neutralized inertia background ions. show it can amplify strength spatial scale orders magnitude, leading large-scale cavities strong very efficient conversion kinetic energy into energy. The growth rate, level, length are derived analytically shown in good agreement fully simulations.
